Upon Exit, Trump Plants a Tech Flag

Quietly, without anyone even noticing…

Among one of his final acts as president of the United States, Trump planted his flag into artificial intelligence (AI).

Considering that AI will add an estimated $67 billion to U.S. GDP this year alone…

And the fact that AI is growing at an astonishing rate of 22% per year…

And the reality that AI is fostering a long-term shift in societal decision-making…

Trump’s move has the potential to be remembered favorably.

Back in August, Trump earmarked over $1 billion in funding for AI and quantum computing research.

And then, exactly a week ago, according to The Hill…

“The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced the establishment of a National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Office as part of an effort by the Trump administration to prioritize AI.”[i]

The undeniable irony here is that former President Richard Nixon — a person with which Trump is now being compared — made a shocking visit to China in 1972... and on the merit of that trip, Nixon is historically credited for thawing America’s diplomatic relations with the communist PRC.

With that in mind, will Trump get the credit for AI?

Only time will tell.

With AI projected to enjoy another scorching-hot year, analyst Brittan Gibbons-O’Neill continues our coverage below.

Onward and upward,

Robert Williams

Tesla’s AI Day

On Sept. 22, 2020, Tesla held its highly anticipated “Battery Day.”

It wasn’t long before news circuits went wild with speculations, recaps and outlooks from the event…

We were among those speculating about what could be revealed on Battery Day, and how to play it.

While this was the first “Battery Day” Tesla had ever debuted, the company is no stranger to holding events like this.

In April 2019, Tesla hosted “Autonomy Day,” where Musk laid out how the company planned on launching self-driving vehicles.

So it would make sense that in 2021 Tesla will hold yet another event that gives the market a peek into the innovative technology it’s working on.

Sure enough, just last weekend, Elon Musk was asked about Tesla’s Dojo supercomputer, to which he responded simply:

Now, this is still just speculation. But based on what the company has been doing in the autonomous driving (and therefore AI) field, it wouldn’t surprise me to see them host yet another groundbreaking event with AI at the center.

And Tesla’s Dojo supercomputer (first teased at their 2019 event) is the perfect place to start when we speculate about Tesla’s AI Day 2021.

AI and autonomous vehicles go hand in hand. To be self-driving, a vehicle has to identify, classify and then act on information it perceives on the road… and all three of these acts can only be trained into the car using artificial intelligence software.

Training these self-driving cars takes an extraordinarily powerful network, which is why Tesla is so intent on creating its own supercomputer.

The speed that the Dojo supercomputer is expected to wield would make it the most powerful supercomputer in the entire world, with current models only sporting about half the data processing power.

The supercomputer will be used to train Tesla’s “Neural Network,” which will be at the core of training its autonomous fleet.

The way the Neural Network works is that it isn’t programmed… but instead it is trained and learns from its “experiences,” truly embodying machine learning.

Tesla AI Day 2021 shouldn’t happen until the end of this year, as Musk alluded to, but we can give some pretty educated guesses as to when it will be and what it will premiere.

First, as Tesla has repeatedly called for the best AI engineers in the business to help work on Dojo, I expect this to be the center of an AI event held by the company.

What else might it hold? We can’t really be sure, but I can’t imagine a supercomputer of this magnitude only being used in the field of autonomous vehicles… especially considering how Musk often casts his talents across many industries.

Then also, based on Elon Musk’s own musings and those of the market most interested in Tesla, it looks like Dojo will likely launch in August or September of this year, so the event will definitely be after that.

It might not seem like much information, but we have 2021 to follow various breadcrumbs Elon leaves for us, so this isn’t the last you’ll see of this story!

Sincerely,

Brittan Gibbons-O'Neill
