Reader Responses

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you’re taking time off, relaxing, and enjoying your time with those closest to you.

Today I’m going to try to show my thankfulness to my wonderful readers by sharing some of your responses to recent issues of Technology Profits Daily.

We have great readers and I make sure to read all of the thoughtful input you have on the wide world of technology.

So let’s get started.

I recently asked if the United States government should use legislation to prop up American businesses over Chinese alternatives. Brett gave us this thoughtful response…

Governments should not pick winners and losers. Let the free market work. No tariffs, which simply increase prices for consumers.

The military should certainly show caution buying goods manufactured overseas. Individuals should be able to buy the products they desire from the manufacturer of their choice.

While we’re on the subject of trade wars, Lloyd tells us about a critical application of LIDAR, which has found its way to the center of the tensions between the US and China…

If you look at how archeologists have been using Lidar to find ancient dwellings and the like hidden by extensive foliage. It's quite obvious that technology would be very useful in evaluating a battlefield or target.

Stanley is bullish on Bitcoin, making a case for it as the best hedge against the US dollar…

It's gonna go through the roof, SEC or not! We're going to have the last halfing soon and there is only so much Bitcoin left. They can’t print more like our money. It's a very rare item, as is gold. The technology is as valuable, if not more so than gold.

In response to The Healing Power of Sound, Michael had this to say…

The healing power of sound has been known about and used by many Native cultures throughout the world for eons. This is nothing new to them but for science to finally be able to produce modulating high frequency vibrations/ ultrasounds in a focused manner opens the door to many new discoveries and possibilities. The fact that music heals is an example of this.

Of all the things you seem to agree on, it seems that you’re most enthusiastic about nuclear energy being the best option among fossil fuel alternatives. Here’s just a few of the responses we’ve gotten on the subject…

Nuclear energy is the ONLY way to meet future energy needs. - Charles

I have long thought that nuclear energy is the most efficient energy source available and is what we should be increasing in our country. - Brian

I am definitely interested in the development of less expensive, less dangerous, nuclear energy. It appears these new approaches would be cleaner also. Perhaps those in charge will pay attention and encourage productivity. - Sue

Small modular reactors = future of energy for AI, Bitcoin, cities large, small, rural and remote. - Michael

Gordon offers his thoughts on a potential artificial general intelligence that are well on their way to being their own issue!

I recently saw a quote attributed to George Orwell that says: The further a society drifts from the truth, the more they will hate those who speak it.

Thus far, it seems that most of the AIs available to the public have been programmed to avoid giving answers that are considered not politically correct by their programmers. It is hard to imagine that a true AGI would reflect such biases. That is, if two AGIs are both asked the same questions, the one that gives a more complete and honest answer, based on all the data available, will wind up being the better AGI, even if many people find its answers offensive or hateful.

But is our society or political system ready to embrace, or even tolerate, the truth on all aspects of discourse? It doesn't seem that way to me.

I’ve tried to relay my excitement about the future of quantum computing but it’s not always easy to articulate such a complicated technology. I do my best and Bruce was nice enough to offer these kind words…

Thanks for the heads-up and overview of the potential benefits of quantum computing. I hadn't heard much or really learned anything about it and WOW, quantum properties and the speed of computation is mind-blowing. Given that humanity's ability to intelligently employ developing technology is a classic challenge, as well as the speed with which changes are happening border on scary. I hope that we can control the genie we may be letting out of the bottle…

And then of course there’s artificial intelligence. AI is quickly changing the world all around us, which our readers have a lot to say about. For example, Rich says…

My biggest concern with A.I. is the tendency it’ll create a society of folks much less inclined to work hard than (correct me if wrong) all previous generations! People don’t mind clinging to hard work in something that requires effort, like with certain things like old fashioned dishwashing…etc…or a skill that AI can’t replace is the specialized human touch that a Special Service Provider, a person that specializes in very specific social interactions with deaf-blind folks in need of assistance/navigation. That’s where A.I. is vastly inferior to the unique human touch!! I’d bet with you Ray a handshake that most deaf/blind folks would rather socialize with a real human than an AI realm!

That’s all for now! I appreciate all your feedback, so keep writing to us at feedback@technologyprofits.com. Happy Thanksgiving!
